What is a Tongue Tie?
Tongue tie is a condition where the small band of tissue beneath the tongue (known as the lingual frenulum) is shorter, tighter, or thicker than normal, restricting the tongue’s movement.
The tongue is essential for several daily functions, including:
- Feeding and swallowing
- Clear speech
- Natural self-cleaning of the mouth
- Healthy jaw and dental development
When tongue movement is limited, one or more of these functions may be affected.

Why Does Tongue Tie Occur?
Tongue tie develops before birth as the baby grows in the womb. Typically, the tissue under the tongue separates adequately, allowing free movement. In some cases, this separation is incomplete, leaving the tissue shorter or tighter than usual.
It is a common condition and may run in families. Many parents first notice it shortly after birth, especially when feeding challenges arise.
Signs Parents May Notice
Not all children with tongue tie experience difficulties, but some common signs include:
In babies:
- Difficulty latching during breastfeeding
- Clicking sounds while feeding
- Prolonged or tiring feeding sessions
- Poor weight gain
- Nipple discomfort or pain for the mother
In older children:
- Difficulty sticking the tongue out
- Trouble licking lips or foods like ice cream
- Speech challenges with sounds such as “l”, “r”, “t”, “d”, and “th”
- Food getting trapped around teeth
- Difficulty maintaining good oral hygiene
When Might Treatment Be Needed?
Tongue tie is not only related to speech. Treatment is recommended only when it leads to noticeable concerns, such as:
- Feeding difficulties
- Speech issues (especially with certain sounds)
- Challenges in maintaining oral hygiene
- Impact on jaw growth, bite alignment, or orthodontic treatment outcomes
A thorough evaluation by your dentist or healthcare provider will determine if treatment is necessary.
How is Tongue Tie Treated?
If treatment is required, a simple procedure called a frenectomy or frenotomy is performed.
This procedure:
- Takes only a few minutes
- Is quick and safe
- Improves tongue mobility
After the procedure, simple tongue exercises may be advised to support better movement and function.
