Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) and Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) Treatment
TMJ Disorder/TMD is a complex of symptoms and conditions indicating an impairment of the normal functioning of the temporomandibular joints, ligaments, and muscles of the head and neck. Sometimes this condition can proceed without symptoms.
Not all TMJ pain is caused by temporomandibular joint dislocation or deterioration. In many cases, TMJ symptoms can overlap with other injuries. However, through some investigative work and expert examination, our TMJ Specialists can determine if TMD treatment is necessary.
Let us know if you’re experiencing any symptoms of:
- Ear pain
- Pain on one side of your jaw
- Popping or clicking noise
- Difficulty opening your mouth
- Joint pain
- Flat, worn teeth
- Pain when chewing
- Crooked or misaligned teeth
Symptoms associated with TMJ dysfunction
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Ear congestion
- Neck pain
- Poor posture
- Sleep problems, snoring, apnea
- Swallowing disorder
- Noise and ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
Diagnosis of TMJ dysfunction
- Thorough history taking
- Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to provide detailed information about the bones involved in the joint and position of the condyles
- Magnetic resonance imaging to reveal problems with the joint’s disk or surrounding soft tissue
- Cephalometric X-Ray for analysis of the position of the upper and lower jaws and their relationship, to measure individual parameters of each patient
- Photo Protocol
- Functional analysis:
- Palpation of chewing and facial muscles, neck muscles, joints
- Assessment of posture, structure and symmetry of structures of the musculoskeletal system
- Analysis of jaw models using digital technologies
- Determining the most optimal and physiological position of the lower jaw using a special method – transcutaneous neurostimulation (TENS). It allows us:
- Relax masticatory and cervical/upper shoulder muscles and establish a physiologic bite
- Take optimal position of the lower jaw registrations
- Treat TMJ dysfunction and associated pain
- Relieve symptoms associated with muscle spasms
- Increase local blood circulation
- Increase a mandibular range of motion
TMD Treatment Process
The 1 stage:
Elimination of TMD’s symptoms and creating the most physiological and neuromuscular relation of the jaws and joint using:
- Intraoral appliances: Splint /Orthotic/Nightguard provide relief from pain and improve jaw function. It is the first step in a multi-step procedure. Wearing it will produce changes in the bite and jaw positions
The 2 stage:
Stabilisation of optimal physiological occlusion. Complete functional and aesthetic rehabilitation of the patient.
Sometimes it will require significant dental treatment, such as orthodontics, crowning teeth, etc. to establish a new permanent jaw position.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
When is TMJ/TMD surgery recommended?
Surgery is usually seen as a final option when non-surgical methods are ineffective. In more severe situations, open joint surgery, arthroscopy, or arthrocentesis (common flushing) may be the surgical alternatives. A medical practitioner carefully considers each situation before deciding whether to proceed with surgery.
-
Is it possible to avoid TMJ/TMD?
Although it may not be able to stop every instance of TMJ/TMD, there are lifestyle choices that lower the risk. It includes keeping your posture straight, refraining from overusing your jaw (such as chewing gum or biting your nails), and using relaxation techniques to reduce tension. Frequent dental examinations can also aid in the early detection of any problems, enabling timely treatment.
-
What are the main causes of TMJ?
TMJ dysfunction (TMD) results in jaw joint discomfort and soreness in the surrounding ligaments and muscles. Teeth grinding, jaw injuries, arthritis, and normal wear and tear are some of the causes. Treatment options for TMJ differ from person to person and might include physical therapy, medication, bespoke mouthguards, and jaw surgery.
-
Can TMJ become a severe health issue?
Yes, TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders can become serious if left untreated or if the condition progresses. Complications may include chronic jaw and facial pain, limited jaw movement, degeneration of the joint, dental issues, chronic headaches, and impact on daily activities like eating, speaking, sleeping, and overall well-being.
-
How can I cure TMJ permanently?
Proper diagnosis of the cause of your TMJ disorder is the first step in a permanent TMJ treatment for your painful condition. Some types of TMD can be managed easily while others are more complex. Ultimately it will depend on what underlying factors are involved (such as joint deterioration or misaligned teeth.)
-
What type of joint is the temporomandibular joint?
Your TMJ is unique in that your mandible (lower jaw bone) has a joint on either side, so one affects the other. Each TMJ (jaw joint) is a type of ball-and-socket joint, similar to what you have in your hip. This design allows your TMJ to move up and down, side to side, and in a variety of different directions — all of which are essential for being able to fully chew your food in preparation for the digestion process.
